Profile

Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Tiruchirappalli is offering a skill enhancement programme in the trade Sericulture under Community College Scheme sanctioned by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi which caters to the needs of the rural women, to take special training on rearing silkworm – the skill, which makes them to be an entrepreneur. The scheme was developed for producing skilled work force personnel in Sericulture, who should align with the National Occupational Standards and Quality Pack formulated by the Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI) of UGC’s XII plan. The college offers different types of experiential learning opportunities to strengthen their entrepreneurial skills in Sericulture. The beneficiaries of the academic year 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2020-21 are women who were not able to continue their higher education because of their family circumstances. They were trained to improve their livelihood by rearing silkworm. Silkworm rearing skills help them to establish their own Sericulture farm. These students are assessed and certified by the Agriculture Skill Council of India at the end of the course.

Mission

  • To train the students for Mulberry plant cultivation, irrigation, manuring, pruning and disease management.
  • Hands-on training on rearing of Silkworms from egg to cocoon harvesting.
  • Pest and disease management of Bombyx mori.
  • To organize classes with subject experts, industry experts and field trainers.
  • To provide soft skill, computer and Internet training

Activities

  • Visit to the Tamil Nadu Sericulture farm to learn the nuances of silkworm rearing, mulberry cultivation, raising and maintenance of mulberry garden and to get onsite rearing knowledge on 18.02.2016 at Manikandam, Tiruchirappalli.
  • Face to face interaction with the industry expert in identification of sex differentiation in larva and pupa of silkworm Bombyx mori and disease identification of silkworm at Tamil Nadu Sericulture Board, Tiruchirappalli unit was organized on 19.12.2021.
  • 2015-16 batch students were trained by PACE Academy from 20.01.2016 to 30.01.2016 for handling competitive examinations.
  • Students were sent to the sericulture units at Trichy, Manigandam and at Pallakkadu, regularly to learn the nuances of silkworm rearing, mulberry cultivation, garden raising and maintenance and to get onsite rearing knowledge. Face to face interaction with the industry expert is possible in this. The students were able to gain confidence for raising their own sericulture farm by this method.
  • One day National level seminar on Sericulture for Livelihood was organized on 24.3.2017, Mrs. N. Mallika, Regional Deputy Director, Dept. of Sericulture delivered a keynote lecture on the topic Role of women in silkworm rearing and Mr. I. Chandrasekaran, Assistant Director, delivered a talk on the topic Cocoon Marketing.
  • Dr. P. Selvaraju, Scientist D, Department of Sericulture, gave hands on training on Evaluation of quality cocoon.
  • Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI) conducted NSQF examination to 2015-16 and 2016-2017 batch students on 17.08.2017. Mr. P. Selvaraju, Scientist D, Central Silk Board, Mysore was the examiner who assessed the candidates and they secured cent percentage result.
  • 2016 - 17 batch students were trained for Pest Management Program at Tamil Nadu Sericulture Board, Hosur division for five days.
  • Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI) conducted skill assessment examination on 14.09.2018. Students from 2017-2018 batch were appeared for the level 4 exam and 2016-2017 batch appeared in NSQF level 6 examination, Mr. P. Selvaraju, Scientist D, Central Silk Board, Mysore was the assessor.
  • Silk Mark Awareness Program was organized on 15.02.2019 in collaboration with Silk Mark Organization of India (SMOI) as an Industry Academia Initiative.
  • ASCI conducted NSQF level 4 examinations for students of 2019 – 2020 batch on 30.11.2019. Mr. Ganapathy from Agriculture University assessed the candidates and all have passed the examination.
  • Training on Grainage technology was conducted on 12.03.2021 at Tamil Nadu Sericulture Board, Trichy unit.
  • Training was conducted on Commercial egg preparation and subsidy given by government for various sericulture activities and insurance policy in silkworm rearing on 12.03.2021.
  • Twenty students of 2020 – 2021 VII Batch appeared for the online NSQF level 4 examination on 16.04.2021 Dr. Ganapathi, assessed the candidates and all the students have secured cent percent result with “O” grade.

Highlights

  • 2015 - 2016 Batch students were appeared for the Tamil Nadu Sericulture Department recruitment examination. Out of the 10 students who have taken up the written examinations, 8 got selected for the next round of personal interview. Among them, 1 student got appointed as Junior Inspector in the year 2016 on a permanent basis.
