Profile

The department of Commerce was established in the year 1976. The M.Com. programme was introduced in the year 1986. The department was elevated to research status, with the introduction of M.Phil. Commerce in 2000 and Ph.D. commerce in 2012. The department is a nodal department offering the UGC sponsored innovative inter-disciplinary programme – M.Com. Event Management from the year 2005-2010. The department also conducts career oriented programmes on Industrial Relations for B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com. students.

Goals and Objectives

To disseminate knowledge in the field of Commerce
To develop analytical skills of the students by offering the specific course papers viz., Quantitative Methods, Operations Research and Data Analysis using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS)
To enhance the employability skills of students by offering Computer related papers like Accounting Package Tally and Data Base Management System
To keep track of the changing trends in the fields of Taxation and Banking

A National level Poster Making Competition was organized on the theme “Advertising Agricultural Products” on 01.03.2025. Students from various colleges participated and won cash prizes
The Department organized an “Orientation Programme towards NET/SET Examinations” on 25.02.2025. Dr. R. Mangaiyarkarasi acted as the resource person and shared some practical tips to crack the exam
The Department of Commerce organized group discussion on the topic “Union Budget 2025” on 13.02.2025. Dr. P.Sugunalakshmi, Associate Professor and Head, PG & Research Department of Commerce was the moderator
Thanthai Periyar Government Arts and Science College in collaboration with the Department organized an Online International Webinar on the topic “ Project Report Preparation and Presentation” on 03.02.2025
In collaboration with Institution Innovation Council, Chanakya Quiz club and Aarif Associates Tiruchirappalli, Dr. S. Sumathi Endowment Lecture I was organized on the topic “Cyber Traps: Protecting Women from Digital Scams” on 08.01.2025. Mr. A.
