Department of Zoology

Profile

The department of Zoology started in the year 1960 at the undergraduate level, was elevated to research level in 2013. The department is reputed for academic excellence and innovations. The department has a dedicated faculty, actively engaged in research activities, receiving grants from reputed funding agencies like University Grants Commission (UGC) and Department of Biotechnology (DBT) for major and minor research projects. The curriculum is revamped once in 3 years to suit the requirements of higher studies and job opportunities. Alumnae of our department have made their mark in various fields around the globe. The department has organized national and international seminars, conferences and workshops, hands-on training in various fields of Biological Sciences. The UGC has sanctioned Community College Scheme for Sericulture in 2015, to augment the entrepreneurial skills for rural women.

  • International Women’s Day 2023 was celebrated in collaboration with Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Chennai on the theme “Yoga for Women” on 08.03.2023

  • A special lecture on “Millets for Women” was organised in connection with International Year of Millet on 02.02.2023. Ms. R. Manasa, Assistant Professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Yuvaraja’s college (Autonomous), University of Mysore, Karnataka was the resource person.
  • World Leprosy Day was observed on 30.01.2023 a national level Essay Writing Competition was organized and Ms. S.Ananya of III B.Sc.Zoologydelivered a special lecture on Hansen's disease
  • An international conference on "Research Trends, Strategies, and Technical Advancements in Biological and Biomedical Sciences for Sustainability (RTSTA’22)" was organised on 14.12.2022& 15.12.2022 in hybrid mode. 166 abstracts were received and the participants presented their papers in 7 parallel tracks. Around 300 scholars participated from 11 states and 6 countries in the conference. Conference proceedings with ISBN was released.
  • Gandhi Jayanthi was celebrated on 30.09.2022, Dr. Thomas Thevera, Professor & Head, Department of Chemistry, WMO College, Muttil, Wyanad, Kerala delivered a lecture on "Significance of Gandhian principles in Attaining Real Freedom". Dr. S. Usha, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Sanskrit, Coordinator, Centre for Ethics & Human values delivered a lecture.
  • World Ozone Day under the theme “Impact of Global Warming” was organized on 16.09.2022. Dr.Naveen Krishnan,President, Global Nature Foundation (GNF), Musiri was the resource person.
  • Dr. M. V. Alli, Associate Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Tiruchirappalli delivered a lecture on "Nutrition and Health for Teens" in Connection with National Nutrition Week Celebration on 08.09.2022
  • Dr. N. Manickam, Research Associate (DBT – Govt. of India), Department of Marine Science, School of Marine Sciences, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli delivered a lecture on “Morphological Taxonomy and Live Feed Importance of Zooplankton” on 07.09.2022.Students were also trained on identifying zooplanktons.

Resources

Museum

The department has a Zoological museum and has unique and innumerable  collections of common, rare, endangered and threatened species. It has more than 300 specimens, which are exclusively collected by our students. It also has the credit of having rare fossil specimens, skeleton of various animals and different stages of foetus.

Library

The department houses a library with more than 700 books, catering to the needs of the students, besides having a book bank. Special efforts are made to add latest text books and scientific journals to the collection. Research scholars of the department have access to the internet facilities for literature survey purposes.

The department is having Microbiology, Physiology and Virtual lab with well-equipped instruments required for UG, and Ph.D. degree programmes.

  • Hands on Training programme on Paper Recycling through integrated solid waste management is been offered the students of aided & self-financed of our college after college working hours

  • A collaborative eco green initiative with TAFCORN to raise the neem nursery and to distribute neem saplings to students from villages in the District under the TAFCORN funded project “Green Dream Through Neem”
