Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College - Department of Physics

Profile

The Department of Physics, established in the year 1966 is one of the renowned research departments in the college. The department known for reputed teaching and research has a team of highly qualified, dedicated and experienced faculty. The department celebrated its golden jubilee in the year 2016 and continues to serve the women community with quality education. The department was elevated to a research centre during the year 1979 with 11 research supervisors and so far, 24 Ph. D degrees have been awarded. The department is granted with DST- FIST at the department level during the year 2006 – 2011 and 2014 – 2019 under college level. The B.Voc. programme on “Electronic circuit designer and Electrician” was sanctioned by UGC in the year 2018 under the skill based education through National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF).

Activities
Department

The department organized the Association Valediction programme on 13th March 2023. Dr. M.P.Thamilselvi, Associate Professor, Department of Tamil, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Tiruchirappalli was the chief guest. She talked on the topic of “ Sikaram num Uyaram ”
The department organized a Science Exhibition on 28th February 2023 as a part of Science Day celebration . More than 100 students from both UG and PG displayed their models explaining various concepts of Physics. Prizes were distributed to the best models
The International Conference virtual Conference on “Material Science and Applications” ICMSA – 2923 was organized by the department on 7th and 8th February 2023. The main aim of this conference was to bring together leading academicians, researchers, technocrats, practitioners and students to exchange and share their experiences and research outputs on all aspects of Material Science. Speakers from different countries were invited for delivering special lectures during these two days. Dr.Abilash Gangula, Assistant Research Professor, Department of Radiology, University of Missourie, USA, Dr.K.Marimuthu, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Gandhigram Rural institute Deemed to be University Gandhigram, Dr.B.Hemanth Kumar, Postdoctoral Fellow, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taipei, Taiwan , Dr.Dhanajay Suresh, Assistant Research Professor, Department of Radiology, University of Missourie, USA, Dr.Kumuthini Rajendran, Postdoctoral Fellow, Chulolongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand were the resource persons. Many abstracts were received from scholars and academicians and selected research papers have been compiled and edited in the form of conference proceedings and Published with ISBN
The department in collaboration with the Department of Physical Education organized an one day National workshop on “Biomechanical Strategies of performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention in Sports” on 28th January 2023. Dr.S.Viswanath Assistant Professor, Department of Physical education & sport science, central University, Santinniketan and Dr.S.Rajakarthihan Assistant Professor Department of Physics, Thiagarajar College, Madurai were the Resource Persons . They delivered the lecture on the topics “Role of applied Biomechanics in performance enhancement and injury prevention” and “Introduction about mechanics and its concepts” respectively. More than 200 students were benefitted from this workshop
The department organized an UGC one day National seminar on 20th January 2023. This remarkable seminar was held on the topic “Energy Materials”. Dr T.C Sabari Girisun, Assistant Professor, Nanophotonics Laboratory, School of Physics, Bharathidsan University, Tiruchirappalli deleivered a lecture on the topic “Smart Materials for Green Energy Harvesting” and Dr I.Vetha Potheher, Assistant Professor of Physics, Anna University, BIT Campus, Tiruchirappalli discussed on “Nano Materials for Energy Storage Applications”
The department organized a special lecture on 19th January 2023. Dr.M.Nalini, Head and Associate Professor, PG & Research Department of History, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Tiruchirappalli was the Resource person. She gave a special lecture on “ Development of Scripts”
The department and Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam Science Club organized the third episode of the seminar series about Physicists who were born on November and December on 07th December 2022. In this programme Ms S.Vasugi from I M.Sc Physics gave a presentation on “Meissner effect and its Application”, Ms C.K Swasini from III B.Sc Physics talked about “Accomplishments of Eugene Wigner”, Ms N.Amirtha Sree from II B.Sc Physics gave a presentation on “Works of Anders Celcius” and finally Ms S.Yuvasree from I B.Sc Physics talked about “Biography of Arnold Sommerfield”
The department and Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam Science Club organized the second episode of the seminar series on celebrating Physicists on 14th September 2022. Physicists born in September were celebrated our students. In this programme Ms V.M. Harshine from III B.Sc Physics gave a presentation about “Michale Faraday: Biography & Inventions” and Ms S.Suwathi sethu from III B.Sc Physics talked about “Irene Joliot Curie: Biography”
The department & Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Science Club, organized the Dr A.Dhanalakshmi Endowment Lecture on 30th August 2022. An eye opening seminar was organized on the topic of “Physics in the age of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning”. The Resource Person Dr. Sithartha Muthu Vijayan, Senior Scientist, CSIR Fourth Pardigm Institute [CSIR – 4PI], Bangalore was the resource person.
