The department of Home Science was started in the year 1961 with the introduction of B.Sc. Home Science, a life science management course that caters to the discipline of Arts, Science and Humanities. Home Science deals with the daily activities, such as food, clothing, shelter, finance, health, child care, beautification and community services. The knowledge inculcated through Home Science helps to upgrade the standard and quality of life, family and the society as a whole and to reach the extremities in all activities of life with skills and talents. Home Science aids to combat the challenges in higher education and update itself to the changing scenario. The five disciplines of Home Science namely Food Science & Nutrition, Textiles & Clothing, Family Resource Management, Human Development and Extension Education is relevant to the day-to-day life. The ultimate purpose is to achieve the welfare and well-being of the family in an ever changing society.

Activities
Department
Home Science is an exclusive field of study which encompasses the discipline of Arts, Science and Humanities. It involves the basic necessities of human life. Various disciplines of Home Science and the activities performed are as follows.
Food Science & Nutrition
- The department organizes Nutrition Week (1-7 September) and World Food Day (16 October) as an annual event. As an outreach activity students perform food sale.
- Food contests are conducted with sponsorship from national and multinational companies like Idhayam, R.K.Soy Foods, Aachi Masala and Nestle.
- Experts like nutritionists, doctors, and food technologists in the areas related to Health and Nutrition are invited every year for special lecture. Visits to food industries and internship training in Hospitals are arranged for students
Textiles & Clothing
- Collaboration with Stylemart, Thillai Nagar, Trichy and PGM Apparels, Manapparai, to enhance the skills in Fashion Designing among the students
- Computerized Sewing Machine aids in enriching the surface decoration and Industrial Sewing Machines offers the students to work with the speed in garment construction.
- Natural dyes are bio-friendly which is effectively used by the students in practical to color the fabric.
Family Resource Management
- Every year cottage stay is conducted for which we are equipped with all the furnishings and accessories. House plans for various income levels are prepared by the students.
- Quantity cookery is initiated during the cottage stay which helps the students to prepare food in bulk.
- The students plan their budget very effectively and are in smart in establishing themselves with the available resources.
Human Development
- Every year as a part of the curriculum the students handle classes at primary and nursery schools.
- The students visit special children and offer them basic training.
- The students extend their services to old age home.
Extension Education
- Students are equipped with skills to become self sufficient and self reliant to establish them as entrepreneurs.
- Students become aware of the Government and Non-Government organizations which would provide them opportunities to serve as well as to receive funds from them in establishing a unit on their own.
- Entrepreneurial skill of students are enhanced by providing training on income generating skill like Food Preservation, Bakery, Garment construction and Artificial Jewellery making are also provided.
Students
- Students have participated / presented papers and posters at Seminars, Conference both at National and International level. Publications are in ISBN and ISSN books and journals and also in proceedings.
- Students have won prizes in various competitions outside the college.
- Field visits and Internships are completed by the students in leading hospitals, hotels, pre schools, special schools, old age homes, textile & garment industries, ICDS units, NGOs to have practical knowledge in their relevant subject.
- Students have served as Resource Person and Experts in giving hands on training at NSS camps and other venue on demand.
- Best out-going students from the college for two consecutive years’ viz., Manisha.S (2014-2015) and Sofiya.S (2015-2016).
