Department of History

Profile

Department of History was incepted in the year 1975 with the introduction of UG programme and the PG programme was introduced in 1980 and upgraded to a research department in 2011. Regional, National, International History is given importance to equip the students to face competitive examinations. Field and skill oriented courses are given importance in the curriculum. The department is specialized for regional studies especially in History of Tamil Nadu, Temple Architecture, Epigraphy, Archaeology, Tourism and Sociology. The department of History is the only department under Bharathidasan University in Thiruchirappalli to include Sociology as an allied discipline in the curriculum.

  • To ensure History as a subject of interest, curiosity and research
  • To create realization about the significance and relevance of History to understand our rich cultural heritage
  • To give a broad understanding on human progress in all fields
  • To strengthen social, moral and spiritual values in the students to help them to grow as responsible citizens
Objectives
  • To understand the evolution, growth and progress of a society in particular and a country in general
  • To develop scientific temper, democratic and secular outlook
  • To encourage field study with a view to create social awareness, appreciation and preservation of historical monuments and heritage sites
  • To inculcate knowledge and skill to compete in all types of competitive examinations
  • To ensure holistic development to match global competency

  • In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the adoption of our Constitution Dr. M. Nageswari gave a lecture on Constitutional Rights

  • To commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the department organized various programmes to sensitize students on the contributions made by the father of the Nation
  • To commemorate the 70th Year of Independence and 75th year of Quit India Movement, the department conducted various programmes reminiscing the great events and sacrifices of our revered freedom fighters in 2017. Online quiz programme, invited lecture, debate and an awareness march were organized

  • Ms. S.Padma III B.A.History, won second prize in the District level Oratorical Competition organised by State Minority Commission Tamil Nadu Government 03.06.2022 Gurunanak College, Chennai and received a cash prize of Rs.10,000/-
  • S.Padma, III B.A.History, submitted a project (Duration – 2 months) on 22.04.2022 entitled 1946 RIN Revolt-Turning point in India’s Political History sponsored by IKS Division, Ministry of Education, Government of India@AICTE, New Delhi and received a stipend Rs.25,000.
  • Ms. S. Padma, III B.A.History submitted a project entitled IMUN online conference 147.0 sponsored by UNHCR-The UN Refugee Agency from 04.02.2023 to 05.02.2023
  • Ms. S. Dhanalakshmi of II M.A. History won the title "Best Athlete-Women" in the All India Inter University Athletic Meet held at Mangalore
  • Ms. S. Dhanalakshmi of II M.A. History participated in the World University Athletic Championship Meet held at Italy in July 2019
  • Ms. V. Yugashri of III B.A. History and Ms. T. Bharathi, II B.A. History won the ‘Winner Trophy’ in the Tamil Nadu Senior Net ball tournament

  • Dr. M. Nalini, Head & Associate Professor, Department of History received “Munnodi Penmani Award 2022” from ‘Department of Women’s Studies, Bharathidasan University, Thiruchirappalli for her contributions in the field of Epigraphy and Temple Architecture for the past thirty years.

  • Nodal department for UGC sponsored Foundation Course on Human Rights Education [2011-2016]
  • A trial mock-parliament is conducted under the theme "A Day in the Parliament" every year
  • A Moot Court Session is organized every year for the final year students to create awareness on the court proceedings

  • The department actively engages in collaborative research in Epigraphy and Temple Architecture with Dr. M. Rajamanikkanar Centre for Historical research
  • Dr. M. Nalini has discovered good number of sculptures and Epigraphs, which helped to reconstruct history of Tamil Nadu in general and Tiruchirappalli in particular
  • Dr. M. Nalini has published 18 books. She has received 15 awards for her meritorious works
