Profile

The PG & Research Department of English is one of the prestigious departments of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College. B.A. English programme was started in 1967 and M.A. English programme was introduced in 1970. The department was elevated to the status of a research department in 1993. The faculty members periodically revise and update the syllabi for B.A., M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D., and incorporate and update knowledge enhancement, skill development and job-oriented papers. Task based English Language Teaching for General English was introduced in 1988 and since then, the department is actively engaged in text book and supplementary materials writing. To mark the silver jubilee of materials production, a review seminar on “Task Based English Teaching” was held in February 2017. The department has completed 54 years since its inception. To mark the golden jubilee celebration of the department, a national seminar on “Interrogating the Self: the Postcolonial Prerogative” in collaboration with TJELLS (The Journal for English Language and Literary Studies) was organised in March 2018. An international webinar on the topic “Theory and Practice: From the Metaphysical to the Postmetaphysical” was convened in June 2020. Intercollegiate competitions at National and International level are conducted every year. The department organises an annual intradepartmental literary fest Delight (Defining English Literature in the Glory of High Talents) on diverse themes. An In-house journal Lit-Venture, a compilation of the creative writings of the students of the department is published every year.


Goal
  • To empower students by making them fluent and confident users of English and by facilitating the acquisition of literary and creative abilities

Objectives
  • To enhance the listening, speaking, reading, writing skills of students and to improve their vocabulary English
  • To facilitate the understanding and appreciation of the nuances of English language and literatures in English
  • To initiate the comprehension of the various genres of literatures in English from an Indian and multicultural perspective
  • To hone the skills of the students to increase the scope of their employability and entrepreneurial abilities
  • To orient them towards innovative research

Activities
Department
  • The Faculty members of the PG & Research Department of English have published two course books for the academic year 2022-2023 titled English for Communicative Competency Book II (ISBN: 978-93-95323-09-3) and English for Communicative Competency Extensive Reader II. Both the course books are prescribed for Part II General English, offered at the undergraduate level
  • Under the corporate training initiative, the faculty of the department offer skill enhancing programme titled Skill Sharing Initiative to the teachers of Kamakoti Vidyalaya and Savitri Vidyasala Hindu Girls’ Higher Secondary School
  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the department and the Government Higher Secondary School, Cauvery Nagar, Pudukkottai, to offer consultancy services to teachers
  • The faculty members of the department offer consultancy services to Wisdom Enterprises, Kattur, Trichy and Iswaryam Academy, Dalmiapuram, Trichy.
  • The intradepartmental Annual Literary Festival DELIGHT was organized on 29.12.2022 and 30.12.2022 on theme 20th Century Women Writers. Students exhibited their creative talent and skills with their performance in events like skit, poster presentation, poetry recitation, literary quiz , if they meet and literary parade
  • A one day national seminar was organized on 06.03.2023. Dr. Manu Mangattu, Poet, Author, Visiting Professor, IA 13 USA Certified Life Coach & Academic Counsellor was the Resource Person
  • International Women’s Day was celebrated for a duration of a week from 06.03.2023 to 10.03.2023. The events organized were awareness programmes on Female Adolescent Health, Women Empowerment and Laws and Self-Defense Skills. Special lectures on Career Prospects in Banking Sectors for Women and Making an Entrepreneur : Scope and Vistas for English Graduates were also organised. Yoga training was given to our students by Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Chennai
  • International Verse Writing Contest was conducted in connection with International Mother Language Day on 21.02.2023. Ms. Immane A Shiphrah, II B.A. English, Bishop Heber College, Trichy bagged the first prize. Ms. Lekha Kothari, I M.Sc. Computer Science, AdharshaMahavidyalaya, Maharashtra won the second prize
  • International Poster Presentation Competition was conducted in connection with National Women’s Day on 13.02.2023. Ms. Arinee Anjum and Ms. Nishat TasnimAnanna, II B.A. English, Daffodils International University, Bangladesh bagged the first prize. Ms. R.V. Yuvanika and Ms. AnnicPringka, III B.A. English, Bishop Heber College, Trichy won the second prize
  • Ms. D. Divya Priya, Assistant Professor, Department of English, National College, Tiruchirappalli oriented the students towards NET/SET Examination on 09.02.2023
  • Debate Club and Theatre Club were inaugurated on 08.09.2022
  • World Literacy Day was celebrated on 08.09.2022
  • Dr.G.Sundari & Dr. K. Shenbagavalli Endowment Lecture was held on 07.09.2022. Dr.Suresh Frederick, Associate Professor and UG Head, Department of English, Bishop Heber College spoke on the topic Ecological Vision in Literature
  • The Inauguration of the Bridge Course in English was organized on 18.07.2022. Dr.K.T.Tamilmani, Associate Professor and Head, Department of English, Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti, Trichy inaugurated the course
  • An international webinar on the topic “Theory and Practice: From the Metaphysical to the Postmetaphysical” was convened on 20.6.2020. Dr. J. Rohan Savarimuthu, Senior Lecturer in English, Department of Languages of Communication Studies, Trincomalee Campus, Sri Lanka acted as the resource person.
  • A national level online literary quiz was conducted on 19.06.2020 and 20.06.2020
  • A UGC sponsored one day national seminar on “Career Opportunities for English Literature Students” was conducted on 29.01.2020
