The department is one of the oldest and prestigious department in the college and the B.A Economics programme was started in 1957. The untiring efforts of the former Principal Madam Ms. Kamatchi led to the introduction of M.A. Economics in 1967. Following that M.Phil. Economics was started in the year 1997 and the department was elevated to a research department in the year 2012. The various programmes offered are aimed at developing the students’ overall personality, giving practical training for developing their employability skills and organizing field surveys for enhancing social awareness and women empowerment through a well-built curriculum. The department celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in 2017.

- To kindle and nurture a passion for the concepts and practical significance of Economics
- To ensure the socio-economic empowerment of women in the context of gender justice
- To inculcate a sense of appreciation for different branches in Economics by teaching the relevant concepts and theories that could be applied to everyday life
- To include socially relevant, market - oriented and environment centric papers
- Recognition of human resource as a base with potential for employment generation and self-employment opportunities

Activities
Department- Know Your Economy Test was conducted on 30.03.2023 to update the current economic affairs in collaboration with Scientific Research Association for Economics and Finance (SRAEF) Chennai.
- National level E-Quiz Competition was organized on 14.03.2023.
- On the topic “Women Empowerment” a meeting was conducted on 07.03.2023.
- Union Budget Discussion – 2023 was held on 06.03.2023 .
- National Level Debate Competition on Union budget -2023 was held on 28.02.2023.
- One day seminar on “Strategies for Promoting Entrepreneurship” was conducted on 06.02.2023.Dr. N.Prasanna, Associate Professor and Head(i/c) in Economics, Bharathidasan University and Mr.N.Kanagasabapathi, Chairman-Trichy Trade Centre were the chief guests of the day.
- “Ms.V. Kamashi and A.J. Anjela Endowment Lecture” was organized on 30.01.2022. Our golden alumnae Dr.Dhulasi Birundha Varadharajan, Executive Council Member of Central University of Pondicherry spoke on the topic “Emerging Environmental Problems in India”.
- A Special meeting on “Entrepreneurial Skill Development” was conducted on 12.09.2022. Dr. A. Tamilarasu, M.Com., M.B.A., Ph.D., Associate Professor in Accounting, Department of Cooperatives, College of Business and Economics, Ambo University, Ethiopia, East Africa spoke on the topic “Entrepreneurial Skill Development”
