Department of Chemistry

Profile

The Department of Chemistry started in the year 1957, was upgraded to a Postgraduate department in the year 1964 and elevated to a research Department in the year 1979. M.Phil. Programme, (Full time and Part time) commenced in the year 1997 and 1983 respectively. The Department was funded by DST-FIST in the year 2006. Right from its inception to till date, the Department is well known for the team work in planning and execution of responsibilities. 86% of faculty members hold doctorate degrees and they are actively engaged in research. Dr. D. Kalaivani, Associate Professor & Head (Retired) generated two patents from her research work carried out in our laboratory. Dr. S. Santhi has been granted a patent in the academic year 2020-2021 for her research work on chemosensors. The Department celebrated its Diamond Jubilee (1957-2017) in December 2017. Every year our students attend summer projects sponsored by Indian Science Academies, in reputed institutions like IGCAR, IISc, IITM, IIT Bhubaneswar, NISER, ICT Mumbai, CECRI, MKU & BARD and also receive university ranks both at UG and PG level.

Activities

Department
  • Organized a photo contest, "Chem - Click" 2023 on the topic "Global science for Global well being" during the period 01.03.2023 to 08.03.2023 for which 30 participants have participated from various colleges.
  • Conducted an "International Online Chem Quiz" on the eve of Science day celebration on February 24, 2023. 71 students of various colleges have participated.
  • Organized a training programme under social service league for active members of self help group on the topic “Learning By Doing For Home Economists” on 24.02.2023. Session I - Dr.P.Kanimozhi, Founder & Managing Trustee, Empower Trust, Trichy - 07 delivered a lecture on the topic “சுயஉதவிக்குழு பெண்களும் சமூக மேம்பாடும்”. Session II - A demonstration programme on “Detection of adulterants in food materials” has been organized. Session III - A programme on “The preparation of phenyle, washing powder and dish wash liquid” has been arranged
  • An International Virtual Conference on “Future Prospects in Chemical Research” conducted on 21st and 22nd Dec 2022. Dr. T. G. Abi, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Kochi, India gave a lecture on the topic “A Practical Approach to Research in Computational Chemistry”. Dr. S. Shanmugam, Senior Lecturer, School of Physics, University Sains, Malaysia delivered a lecture on the topic “Materials for display and optoelectronics”. Dr. Madhukar Hemamalini, Visiting Researcher, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia. (Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal) spoke on the topic “Hydrogen Bonding Studies of Pharmaceutical Cocrystals” Dr. M. Panneerselvam, Postdoctoral Researcher, Institute of Chemistry, Department of Physical Chemistry, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil delivered a lecture on the topic “An Introduction to Computational Chemistry: Applications in Energetic Materials Research”.
  • On 13.04.2022, Dr. R. Lalitha, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Commerce, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Tiruchirappalli 620 002 enriched the students on the title “Seven Steps to success” and prizes were distributed to the winners of the quiz contest.
  • Dr. K. R. Meenal, Dr. V. Kamala, Dr. Lalitha Gnanadoss, Dr. V. Meenakshi and Dr. T. S. Jani Bai Endowment Lecture was held on 30.03.2022. Dr. M. Rajan, Professor (Assistant), Department of Natural Products Chemistry, School of Chemistry, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai delivered lecture on the topics Biomaterials Applications in Tissue Regenerations and Career Opportunities in India and Abroad' for Chemistry Students.
  • On the eve of National Science Day, a meeting was organized on 28.02.2022 - Prof. Dr. A. Ilangovan, Dean-Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology, School of Chemistry, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli – 24 was the chief guest and spoke on the topic “Chemistry In Everyday Life”
  • Commemoration lecture was organized on 01.02.2022. Mr. R. Jegan, Chemical and Metallurgical Department, CMT Laboratory, Southern Railway, Ponmalai Tiruchirappalli-4 gave information to the students on the title “Central Government Job Opportunities for Chemistry Students”
  • IQAC and PG & Research Department of Chemistry organized a special meeting on 30.12.2021. Dr. Rajesh Sonti, Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hyderabad, Telangana gave a lecture on the topic ” NMR - A tool in characterization and structure elucidation of pharmaceutical degradation products ”
  • Alumnae Webinar Series in connection with the celebration of "Chemistry Day" - World Chemistry Forum was organized from 21.10.2021 to 23.10.2021. Dr. V. Violet Dhayabharan, Dean of Sciences & Associate Professor of Chemistry, Co-Ordinator, Department of Bio-technology and Bioinformatics, Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirappalli, Dr. R. Vijayalakshmi, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Queen Mary’s College and Dr.K. Tharani, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Government Arts College, Tiruchirappalli were the resource persons.
  • Prof. K. Pandian, Controller of Examinations, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Madras, Guindy Campus, Chennai delivered a lecture on the topic " Two Dimensional nanomaterials- Recent trends ”on 01.10.2021
  • On the eve of World Ozone day, a National level Intercollegiate Quiz was conducted from 13.09.2021 to 19.09.2021 in a virtual platform. Around 1100 participants from various colleges and universities were participated
  • PG and Research Department of Chemistry in collaboration with the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) (Trichy-Madurai Local Chapter) organised a E-lecture workshop on “Advances in Chemical Sciences” on 17.09.2021.   • Dr. P. Venkatesan, Post-doctoral Research Fellow, Laboratory of Nanomedicine and Drug Delivery, Department of Chemistry, National Chung Hsing University, Taichung, Taiwan, delivered a lecture on “Silica Nanoparticles Based Drug Delivery for Cancer Therapy and Chemsensors for Bio- Imaging” on 03.09.2021
  • An international webinar on “Sparkling facets of Chemistry” was organized on 27.02.2021. Dr. Durga Prasad Karothu, Research Scientist, New York University, Abu Dhabi Dr. Rajesh Sonti, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis, Hyderabad, Telangana and Dr. Sourav Laha, Scientist, Max Planck Institute, Germany were the resource persons
  • Faculty members and students demonstrated the preparation of Phenyle and Detergent powder to the public in the adopted village Manakkal under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan on 27.02.2021
  • COVID -19 awareness programme was organized at Manakkal village. The public were made aware of the preventive measures to curtail the spread of corona. Sanitizers and liquid soaps were distributed

  • Hands-on training on the preparation of Phenyle and cleaning powder is given to the students, non-teaching staff and public every year in collaboration with the ED Cell of SRC to develop entrepreneurial skill
  • Special science programs are conducted at Government Higher Secondary and Middle Schools in Siruvachur and Somarasampettai every year
  • A programme on the theme “Inculcating Scientific Approach through day to day Activities” is conducted in Veeran Middle School, Sankaran Pillai Road, Trichy every year
  • Endowment lectures are organized every year by inviting subject experts from renowned institutions like NIT, CLRI, CECRI, BDU, MKU and Central University

  • Dr. S. Santhi - awarded “Women Researcher award” by VDGOOD Professional Association on 2022.
  • Dr. M. Vasuki - awarded “Perasriyar Semmel Virudhu” by Anaithu India Tamil Ezhuthalarkal Sangam & Kavigan Pathipagam on 12.12.2021.
  • The department received FIST grant in 2014 under college level scheme category I
  • 36 research scholars have been awarded the Ph.D. degree in the past 3 decades
  • The faculty members have completed 16 minor projects funded by UGC to an amount of 14,50,000/- in the past 17 years and received 2 major projects to an amount of Rs.9,81,000/- and Rs.21,78,000/- sanctioned by UGC and DST respectively
  • Dr.D.Kalaivani has generated two patents from her research work carried out in our laboratory. Dr. S. Santhi has been granted a patent in the academic year 2020-2021 and filed a patent in the year 2021-2022 for her research work on chemosensors

  • Ms. K.R. Meenal and Dr. T.S. Jani Bai, formerly Associate Professors, served as the Principals from 1988 to 1993 and from 1996 to 2005 respectively and Dr. R. Selvameena, formerly Associate Professor and Dr. M. Vasuki, Associate Professor and Head served as the Vice-Principals from 2014 to 2017 and from 2017 and 2021 respectively. Dr. A.
