Department of Botany

Profile

The department of Botany was started in the year 1963 and celebrated its golden jubilee in the year 2013. The department has received Research Fund from Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Department of Science and Technology (DST). It has organized hands on training and exhibition on herbarium & museum. It maintains a “Diamond Jubilee herbal garden” in the campus. Faculty are actively engaged in research activities and publish papers in peer reviewed journals. They have completed major and minor projects funded by University Grants Commission (UGC). The curriculum is designed and developed to suit the needs of the students for higher studies and self entrepreneurship. The UGC has sanctioned Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) in Horticultural Science, a degree programme under the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF)

  • To inculcate and promote basic human values through science education.
  • To instill a sense of interest in plant science and appreciation in the industrial, economic, environmental and social context.
Objectives
  • To provide opportunities for career based knowledge acquisition
  • To equip students' skills through which they can proceed for further studies in specialized areas at Botany
  • To impart knowledge of scientific concepts, correlation and interdependence of various branches of Botany

Meetings organized by Phytoclub

  • In collaboration with Research Department of Zoology conducted a meeting on 24.02.2023, Dr. S. Usha, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Sanskrit, spoke on the topic “Professional Ethics”
  • Department of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, Home Science, Hospital Administration & Nutrition and Dietetics jointly organized a meeting on 24.02.2023 on the eve of commemoration of Science Day Celebration. Mr. Paul Ramesh, Educator and Trainer spoke about “Increasing consumerism & its impact on the Environment”
  • On 23.02.2023, Dr. T. Sumitha, Assistant Professor in History, delivered a lecture on “We, The People of India”
  • Dr. R. Vidhya, Associate Professor and Head, Department of English, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, enlightened on the topic “Enhancing the listening and speaking skills of College students for Professional competency” on 20.02.2023 as a skill development programme to our students
  • Life skill Programme was organized on “The Martial Art – Silambam – A Demo”, on 15.02.2023. Ms. S. Sathya, III B.Sc., Botany demonstrated Silambam
  • Ms. L. Rishikaa and S. Suvaethalakshmi, of III B.Sc., Botany, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, trained the students on “Canva design skills” on 14.02.2023
  • Gender Equity Program was organized on the title “பெண்களுக்கு எதிரான வன்முறையும் பாதுகாப்பும்”, on 3.2.2023. Dr. S. Yoga Lavanya, Faculty, Srilankan Tamil Sangam, Canada, was the resource person
  • In collaboration with Department of Economics a special lecture was organised on “Entrepreneurial Skill Development” on 12.09.2022 Dr. A. Tamilarasu, Associate Professor in Accounting, Department of Cooperatives, Ambo University, Ethiopia was the resource person
  • Organized a special lecture on 15.09.2022 and Dr. Naveen Krishnan, President of Global Nature Foundation , Musiri , spoke on the heading “Integrated Farm Management for Sustainable Agriculture”
  • “Botany Expo- 2022” on 26.07.2022 was organised to create awareness on Herbarium and Museum. More than 1200 students from various schools and colleges visited and appreciated
  • One day international webinar on “Recent trends in Medical Microbiology” was organized on 10.03.2021. Dr. Nazeerulla Rahamathulla, Assistant Professor in Microbiology, Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine, Gulf Medical University, Ajman, U.A.E and Dr. K. Saravanakumar, Research Professor, Department of Bio-Health Convergence, Kangwon National University, Chuncheon, Gangwon-do 24341, Republic of Korea, enlightened the students on the topics “Transmission, pathogenesis and immunology of SARS-CO V-2 infection” and “human fungal infection: Human defience and clinical challenges” respectively
  • The Department of Botany in collaboration with Students’ Exnora celebrated Women’s day on 08.03.2021, Exn. P. Mohan, Founder, Youth Exnora International, Tiruchirappalli and Dr. S. Sankari, Former Vice – Principal Cauvery College, Tiruchirappalli were the resource persons
  • Association meeting on “My Journey in SRC” was organized on 12.02.2021. Prof. Dr. S. Indra, Former HOD, Department of Botany, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College addressed the students
  • A one day international webinar on “COVID- 19: Impacts on Food and Agriculture” was organised on 02.07.2020. Dr. S. Vijayakumar, Post- Doctoral Research Fellow Marine College, Shandong University, Weihai.P.R.China and Dr. M. Hemalatha, Associate Professor, chaired the sessions
  • One day seminar on “Recent trends in Horticulture” was organized on 18.12.2019. Dr. V. Lakshmanan, Professor & Head, Department of Vegetable Science, Horticultural College & Research Institute for Women, Tiruchirappalli and Dr. V.P. Santhi, Assistant Professor, Department of Fruit Science, Horticultural College & Research Institute for Women, Tiruchirappalli delivered lecture on the topic “Advances in vegetable production” and “Advances in fruit production” respectively
  • A workshop on “Vermicompost production and its various applications” was conducted on 17.08.2019. Dr. P. Muthukrishnan, Professor, Department of Biotechnology Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts & Science (W), Perambalur shared his expertise

Competitions conducted

  • National Science Day International Slogan writing competition was organized on on 28.02.2023 through virtual platform. Around 60 participants from various colleges and Universities participated and cash awards were distributed to the prize winners. Mr. Mohamed Mustafa, II M.Sc., Microbiology, Sri Paramakalyani College, Tenkasi, bagged the first prize and Miss Renuga, II B.Sc., Microbiology, Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College, Tiruchirappalli, secured second prize
  • In commemoration of MARTYRS’ DAY, Inter School Drawing competition was conducted on 28.01.2023. Thirty students from various schools participated and bagged prizes
  • In commemoration of International year of Millets, a National level intercollegiate competition was conducted on the theme “Millet for Elegance” on 25.01.2023 in virtual platform. Around 40 participants from various colleges participated and cash awards were distributed to the prize winners. Miss. P.Varsha P, II M.Sc., Botany, H.H. The Rajah’s College, Pudukkottai, bagged the first prize and Miss. Kaniyamudhu A, IIIB.Sc., Botany, National College, Tiruchirappalli, won the second prize

  • Workshop on “Herbal preparations” for self-help group, Ariyamangalam, Tiruchirappalli. Rtn. AKS. M. Muruganantham, Rotary Governor enlightened on Entrepreneurial skills and participation certificates were distributed to self-help group

  • Faculty offered training to the teachers of Kamakoti Vidyalaya, Tiruchirappalli on Gardening and Landscaping

Extension activities/ Social Initiatives

  • An Awareness programme on “COVID-19 and its preventive measures through Herbal Remedies” was organised in the adopted village, Sirumayangudi on 27.03.2021. The participants were also trained on the methods of vermicompost production
